flohmarkt is the German name for flea market - and also the name of a cool project which allows you to self-host a small virtual flea market.
I host an instance of this software which can be found on www.brugt-bazar.dk - it currently looks like this:
Now, the cool thing about flohmarkt - or one of the cool things about flohmarkt - is that it uses ActivityPub, the open protocol which allows us to set up decentralized social networking services. This means that:
- Other flohmarkt-installations can choose to show my items in their market
- You can search for an item from www.brugt-bazar.dk on e.g. Mastodon and find it, share it, whatever
- If someone on mastodon replies to the posting, the replies are shown on flohmarkt, and you can reply to them from there
And so on and so forth. While this technology is still in its infancy, it is most definitely our best shot at wrangling the internet back from the corporate overlords who stole it from us.
So please - go make an account, post items for sale, set up instances for your city or your community, and let me know so we can federate and help them reach more people!
